NSWOOA 2018 Annual General Meeting

This year, the AGM will be held Saturday, June 2nd, in the Avery Room at the Shubenacadie Canal Commission, 54 Locks Road, Dartmouth, NS. As always, it is a chance to learn more about issues affecting small woodlot owners in Nova Scotia. You can count on a worthwhile and informative program, a roomful of great people and a delicious lunch, all for just $15 for members and $25 for non‐members. A tentative agenda is included below.

We have a lot to talk about in Dartmouth: 2018 is going to be quite a year for NSWOOA! With six major projects underway, this might be one of the busiest 12 months since our formation in the late 1960s.

You’ll hear much more at the AGM, but I’m delighted to report that NSWOOA recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with three landowner co-operatives in central Nova Scotia: North Nova Forest Owners Co-op in Wentworth, Athol Forestry Cooperative in Amherst, and Conform Ltd. in Middle Musquodoboit. We are exploring ways to improve the delivery of woodlot services in the central corridor of Nova Scotia. As Conform Manager Ed MacDonell put it, “Collectively, we represent the largest group of actively managed woodlots in the province.” Altogether, the four organizations serve about 1,000 small landowners with more than 200,000 acres of forestland.

NSWOOA also has invested significant effort over the past six months in the Independent Review of Forest Practices in Nova Scotia, led by Dr. William Lahey, president of Kings College in Halifax. The final report is almost ready for release, and we hope to be able to report the findings at our AGM. The stakes are high, the issues are contentious, but we remain optimistic.

In addition, we are investigating ways to address the significant challenges faced by rural communities across the province. We have proposed a new, multi-sector initiative that will bring together forest owners, farmers, in-shore fishers, owners of tourist businesses, and others with a stake in the rural economy.

Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. The meeting will start at 9 a.m. and conclude in mid-afternoon. You can download the agenda below. The cost is $15 for members and $25 for non-members, payable by cash or cheque at the door. A hearty lunch is included.
