This catalogue of resources is a work in progress. NSWOOA intends for it to become the most comprehensive source of information available on sustainable management of the Acadian Forest. If you have suggestions about resources or topics that are not listed below, please send them to Andy Kekacs at andy.nswooa@gmail.com

New tool for family forest owners!

Set your goals for forest ownership, and identify the resources you need to achieve them, by using NSWOOA's new self-assessment tool for small-woodland owners. It's simple, useful, and fun. To begin, click here.

As an incentive to try this goals assessment, every landowner who completes it (and provides contact information) will be entered into a drawing to win a free site assessment for one parcel of woodland in Nova Scotia. A forest professional will determine the current conditions on the lot and give you a written report on your best options for the future. Management planning is one of the most important tools for woodland owners. Depending on the size of your lot, this incentive is valued at $250 or more.

Acadian Forest and General Woodlot Management

Picea Forestry Consultants and Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, Management of Natural Acadian Forest: A Guide to Resources.” This guide highlights and organizes resources that are available to help Nova Scotia woodlot owners and other forest stakeholders manage for natural forest and for multiple forest benefits and uses.

Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, “Woodlot Management Home Study Program,” http://woodlot.novascotia.ca/content/woodlot-management-home-study-program. Have you ever wondered how to grow more wood, improve wildlife habitat on your woodlot, or maintain and safely operate your chainsaw? Find out here. Choose between studying online, downloading from the site, or mailing in.

Association for Sustainable Forestry, “Leaving a Legacy.” ASF, which administers a program that funds silviculture on private land (see below under Silviculture Assistance), has also produced an excellent, three-part video series on management techniques that may be of interest to the owners of small forested parcels. Matt Miller, a director of NSWOOA, is featured.

Part 2: Crop Tree Pruning
Part 3: Crop Tree Release

Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, "A Woodland Owner’s Guide to Forest Ecosystem Classification in Nova Scotia," http://novascotia.ca/natr/woodlot/pdf/Ecosystem-Classification.pdf. In ecosystem-based management, a woodlot owner uses information about the vegetation and soil types present in a forested parcel to understand the natural processes that are -– or should be -– occurring there, and what species are best suited to the site. Additional information can be found at http://novascotia.ca/natr/woodlot/fec-guides.asp

 Chainsaw and Forest Safety

University of Minnesota Extension, “Safe Chainsaw Operation,” http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/naturalresources/dd2487.html. Chainsaws are powerful and valuable tools. They can be found on most farms and in homes where wood is cut for fireplaces or heating systems. However, the potential for accidents while using a chainsaw is high, and injuries sustained are usually severe.

Nova Scotia Woodlot Owners and Operators Association, "Hiring a Contractor," http://nswooa.ca/assets/Uploads/files/Hiring-a-Contractor.pdf. There are many things to consider when hiring a contractor to work on your woodlot to harvest timber, perform silviculture work, build roads, or perform other activities. This short handout suggests some things to look for and include in a contract.

Nova Forest Alliance, “Forest Service Directory,” http://fsdb.ca/. The goal of this directory is to provide a tool to match Nova Scotia forestry contractors and woodlots owners. There is no screening of contractors who appear in the directory. Landowners should always take additional steps to verify the reliability of service providers, and their capacity to do good work, before signing a contract.

 Water and Wetlands

Draining, filling, flooding or excavating wetlands may require approval from Nova Scotia Environment. Details are summarized in the Nova Scotia Wetland Conservation Policy, http://www.gov.ns.ca/nse/wetland/conservation.policy.aspand in a document titled,  "So You Need To Alter A Wetland," http://www.gov.ns.ca/nse/wetland/wetland.alteration.asp.

Maine Forest Service, “Vernal Pools: Important Wildlife Habitat,” http://www.maine.gov/tools/whatsnew/attach.php?id=392597&an=1. Vernal pools provide important habitat to many forest creatures. They also provide an opportunity for landowners interested in managing their forestland to benefit wildlife. Timber harvesting, recreational and development activities should avoid direct disturbance to vernal pools and limit impacts to the nearby forest.
